PALO ALTO CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY
March 7 – April 25, 2007
Wednesday evenings, 6 – 9PM for 8 consecutive weeks
The Palo Alto Police Department is inviting community members to participate in the 20th Citizens Police Academy, which will begin March 7, 2007. It is an 8-week course, emphasizing the basic elements of law enforcement. Its primary purpose is to give participants an overview and a better understanding of the police department’s basic functions and operational procedures. The curriculum will address misconceptions by offering a no-nonsense approach to the reality of police work. Students will learn about our police organization, what it takes to become a police officer for Palo Alto, Patrol Procedures, Defensive Tactics & Officer Safety, how crimes are investigated, the use of Deadly Force & firearms, Internal Investigations and Radio Communications.
Classes will be held from 6–9 PM at the Cubberley Community Center, 4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. Class size is limited to 20 students.
Graduates of Citizen Police Academies are invited to attend advanced classes such as Evidence Collection, Sexual Predators, Fraud & Financial Crimes, SWAT, Canine Team, and Stress Management in Law Enforcement.
Candidates must meet the following criteria:
-Minimum age of 16 years (under 18 must have parental consent)
-Live, work or connected to the Palo Alto community
-No felony convictions
-No misdemeanor convictions within one year of application
-Interview and background check

Applications will be accepted until the class is full. Others will be placed on a waiting list for the next class Sept 5 – Oct. 24, 2007. Acceptance is based upon completion of a basic background and interview. Applications are accepted on a continuous basis.
